There was a time when all people needed from an office was a table, a chair, stable electricity, and reliable internet. But that’s no longer enough in today’s Nigeria, where entrepreneurs are building businesses from scratch, freelancers are juggling multiple gigs, and remote workers are logging into jobs in other time zones.
Coworking spaces are becoming more than just places to work. They are growing into platforms for community, learning, and opportunity. Ask any freelancer in Lagos or Abuja why they left home to work from a shared space, and they might say, “I needed focus, structure… and light.” But give them a few weeks in that space, and their answer will likely change. You might then hear responses like “I found community here”, “I met people who work in the same field, and can run ideas by,” “I met other startups who introduced me to where I can get links for grants and contracts.”
This is the shift happening quietly but steadily. Coworking spaces are no longer just about renting out a desk or office. The best ones are becoming ecosystems where people connect, create, and grow.
Take, for example, Ella, one of our community members at Ventures Park. She joined our community in 2023 as an administrative assistant at a startup.. Over time, with exposure to new opportunities and connections, she transitioned into a role that aligns more closely with her career goals. Today, she works as an operations associate at a human resource consulting firm she connected with through the community engagement programs. Though she started reserved, engaging with other members and entrepreneurs helped her grow in confidence and build both her professional journey and personal brand. Outside her day job, Ella is also a talented mixologist. In her words, “Ventures Park and its community have played a big role in shaping my career and even patronised my business for events held within the space.”
This is what workspace as a service looks like. It is not just about the revenue generated. It is about real support. It is about being in an environment where you are learning, meeting people who stretch your thinking, and getting the tools you need to move forward in your work.
Coworking in Nigeria, Ventures Park as a case study, is quietly filling in the gaps that many entrepreneurs and independent workers face. Where traditional systems fall short, the community steps in.
